生い立ち,という程でもないが,Phonethicaを構想した経緯について最近頻繁に説明を求められるので,そのことについて(特に偶然性云々ということについて)記述した英文テキストを以下に抜粋し掲載しておく.

My engagement with this chance element is in fact also central to my musical concerns. In my early work as a composer I found myself uncomfortable with traditional systems of music notation, which seemed somehow too vague and inadequate for describing music. Paradoxically, I now recognise I have found a kind of liberation in this vagueness, which seems to support an almost infinite number of readings. I have come to understand that it is the misplacement and dislocation of meaning which is music’s raison d’être, and is also the inspiration for much of my work with new media. Since autumn 2003, I have been engaged in the project Phonethica, an interdisciplinary media art project whose aim is to create the structure for a chain of chance connections between different languages through their respective, but coinciding, sounds. The implication of this project is the possibility of creating an alternative (counter) value system in a world which has become too structured by entrenched and fixed systems of meaning. Taking the diversity of mankind as its starting point, its attempt is to make a new kind of reference tool - one governed more by chance more than by reason. It can be seen as part of a wider world quest for a practical means of survival - through an organic synergy between technology and art.
